On 3 September 2023, Bangladesh took on Afghanistan in the fourth game of the ongoing Asia Cup in Lahore. It was a must-win game for the Bangla Tigers as they lost their first game against Sri Lanka. While the Afghans were looking for a winning start in this tournament. Speaking of the match, the Bangladesh skipper, Shakib Al Hasan won the toss and opted to bat first.

However, the Bangla Tigers made a surprising change as they sent all-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz to the opening with Mohammad Naim. Both of them put up a 60-run opening partnership but the second wicket also fell on 63 runs. Then, Najmul Hossain Shanto came and continued his form.

He and Mehedy put up a 194*-run partnership for the third wicket. Mehidy got retired hurt after scoring 112* runs off 119 balls, including seven fours and three sixes. However, Shanto continued to play his shots and got out after smashing 104 runs off 105 balls, including nine fours and two sixes. In the end, skipper, Shaking also remained not out on 32* runs off 18 balls and Bangladesh put up a huge total of 334 runs for five wickets in 50 overs. For Afghanistan, both Gulbadin Naib and Mujeeb Ur Rahman took one wicket each.

In reply, Rahmanullah Gurbaz got out on just one run and it was a disappointing start for the Afghans in the chase. Then, Ibrahim Zadran and Rahmat Shah put up a 78-run partnership for the second wicket. Zadran scored 75 runs off 74 balls while Shah scored 33 runs. Skipper, Hashmatullah Shahidi scored 51 runs off 60 balls, including six fours. But, after that, they faced a batting collapse and after 42 overs, they were on 231 runs for eight wickets. Still, Afghanistan fans were hoping for a miracle knock from Rashid Khan but he scored only 24 runs as the Afghans got bundled out for 245 runs. Thus, they lost the match by 89 runs.
