Speaking of the match, Ben Stokes won the toss and asked Australia to bat first. In their first innings, the Aussies scored 263 runs. Then, England managed only 237 runs and handed a 26-run lead to the visitors. Then, in their second innings, Australia got bundled out for 224 runs and set a 251-run target for England. But, England's batters held their nerves and won the game by three wickets. Mark Wood made a remarkable comeback in the longest format of the game as he won the Player of the Match award. He picked up seven wickets while scoring valuable 24 runs with the bat.

Regarding him, Stokes said: “When you've got someone who can come in and bowl 95mph, it's a massive help. It impacts the game, whether he's taking wickets at one end or they come at the other. Great to see him smiling, running in and bowling rockets. And with the bat, he's a free spirit, and very clear in his mind. He walked out knowing how he wanted to take the game on, doesn't always come off but it gives you a better chance.” However, it was Steve Smith’s 100th Test match but did not go well for him. In two innings, he scored just 24 runs.
