The stage was set at BRSABV Ekana Cricket Stadium, Lucknow on 16 May 2023 when Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) took on Mumbai Indians (MI) in the ongoing IPL. Before the clash, LSG were in the fourth spot with 13 points in 12 games while MI were in the third position with 14 points in 12 games.

Both teams were looking for a win to strengthen their grip in the race for the playoffs. Speaking of the match, MI won the toss and asked LSG to bat first. For LSG, Deepak Hooda and Quinton de Kock came out to bat. But, Hooda failed cheaply as he scored five runs off seven balls. It was another failure for this batter in this tournament.

LSG defeated MI by five runs

Then, de Kock failed also as he scored 16 runs off 15 balls, including two sixes. Prerak Mankad won the Player of the Match award in the last game. But, he managed a golden duck only. Then, Krunal Pandya scored 49* runs off 42 balls, including one four and one six. But, he got retired hurt and left the field. Then, it was Marcus Stoinis who lit up the stadium with some outrageous shots on a tricky pitch where bowlers were getting assistance. He smashed 89* runs off 47 balls, including four fours and eight sixes. Thus, LSG scored 177 runs for three wickets in 20 overs.

For MI, Jason Behrendorff took two wickets while Piyush Chawla took one wicket. In reply, both Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan gave a solid start to MI as they put up a partnership of 90 runs for the first wicket in 9.4 overs. Rohit scored 37 runs off 25 balls, including one four and three sixes. Then, Ishan Kishan scored 59 runs off 39 balls, including eight fours and one six. Suryakumar Yadav also failed cheaply for seven runs off nine balls. But, finally, MI scored only 172 runs for five wickets in 20 overs. Hence, LSG won the game by five runs.
