On 4 September 2023, Team India and Nepal locked horns with each other in Pallekele in the fifth match of the ongoing Asia Cup. India’s first match against their arch-rivals Pakistan got called off after one innings. So, they were awarded with one point only. While Nepal suffered a huge loss against the Men in Green in the tournament opener.

So, it was a must-win clash for both teams to qualify for the ‘Super 4’ stage of the tournament. Before the clash, reports were that heavy rain could become a major threat to this match. But, the match kicked off on the scheduled time and the Team India skipper, Rohit Sharma asked Nepal to bat first after winning the toss.

However, Nepal got an excellent start as an opening partnership of 65 runs took place between Kushal Bhurtel and Aasif Sheikh. Bhurtel scored 38 runs off 25 balls while Sheikh scored 58 runs off 97 balls. But, after that, India’s bowlers managed to take wickets at regular intervals as Nepal were on 144 runs for six wickets in 31.5 overs. But, in the end, Sompal Kami came up with another valuable 48-run knock as Nepal got bundled out for 230 runs in 48.2 overs. For the Men in Blue, both Ravindra Jadeja and Mohammed Siraj took three wickets each. While Mohammed Shami, Shardul Thakur, and Hardik Pandya grabbed one wicket each.

In reply, Rohit and Shubman Gill came out to open but after 2.1 overs, the match got paused due to rain. Then, after some time, play resumed as India’s revised target was 145 runs in 23 overs. Rohit scored fifty from just 39 balls while Gill notched up his fifty off just 47 balls. They also put up the century partnership off just 82 balls. Finally, they put up an unbeaten opening partnership of 147* runs as the Men in Blue won the game by 10 wickets. Rohit scored 74* runs while Gill remained not out on 67* runs.
