“It does hurt”- Abhimanyu Easwaran on snub from India v West Indies Test series

Bengal opener Abhimanyu Easwaran has been on the sidelines despite being part of the Indian squad as backup opener since 2021. He had remained on fringes seeing others make their India Test debut as he waits for his chance.

Since his first call-up, Abhimanyu Easwaran has seen 15 players make their Test debuts. The Bengal star has been a consistent benchwarmer, while Yashasvi Jaiswal and others have risen to prominence. Easwaran, on the other hand, is upbeat and looking forward to returning to the Ranji Trophy.

“Yes, it does hurt sometimes. You put in all the effort, train hard, and the dream is to be in the middle — to perform, to contribute to wins. But I’m fortunate to have a solid support system: my family, friends, and coach. They help me stay grounded and motivated. Right now, I’m in a good headspace and looking forward to the Ranji season,” Easwaran told Revsportz.

Easwaran has played 105 FC matches, scoring 7954 runs at an average of 48.50, with 27 centuries and 32 fifties, including the best score of 233.

Despite being in his 30s, Easwaran draws inspiration from late-debuting athletes Michael Hussey and Suryakumar Yadav. Surya, who is currently India's T20 captain, made his debut after turning thirty.

“Absolutely. I’m a big fan of Michael Hussey. Even before his Australia debut, he was consistently scoring in domestic cricket. His journey shows what perseverance can achieve. Even Surya [Suryakumar Yadav] making his India debut after 30 and now leading the team — it’s incredible. Players like them are great examples. So yes, it’s always at the back of my mind — “Why not me?” he added.
