Chennai Super Kings (CSK) were looking for their sixth win of this ongoing IPL season when they took on Punjab Kings (PBKS) on 30 April 2023 at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chepauk. But, they failed as PBKS chased down 201 runs with four wickets in hand. For CSK, Tushar Deshpande took three wickets, Ravindra Jadeja took two wickets, and Matheesha Pathirana took one wicket.

After the match, Deshpande became the highest wicket-taker in the tournament till now. Hence, he received the Purple cap. But, still, fans were not happy as they slammed him for his higher economy. As of now, Tushar Deshpande has taken 17 wickets in nine matches, at an economy of 11.07.

Fans also blamed him for the loss against PBKS. In his first two overs, he took the wicket of PBKS skipper, Shikhar Dhawan by conceding 16 runs. Then, Dhoni used him in the 16th over. But, Livingstone smashed him for three sixes, and while one ball went for four leg byes. On the fifth delivery, he took the wicket of the England batter but conceded 20 runs. After that, he came up to bowl the 19th over. PBKS needed 22 runs in two overs but Deshpande conceded 13 runs despite taking the wicket of Jitesh Sharma. Thus he finished the match with three wickets for 49 runs in four overs.

After losing the match, CSK skipper, MS Dhoni also claimed that his bowlers bowled two bad overs. They even lacked with a proper plan or the execution of those plans. He said: “We lost it in a couple of overs in the middle. You need to be aware what you need to bowl and be clear because the batters will be going for it. Also towards the end of our innings, could we have got 10 more? Because our bowling needs exposure, and we should be doing better with the bat. The pitch had turn, there was some turn when it hit the seam. The slower balls gripped. I think 200 was par but we bowled two bad overs. Pathirana bowled well but other than that, we need to see if the plans were wrong or the execution was bad.”
