Ahead of the highly anticipated clash, former South Africa cricketer and legend AB de Villiers shared his views, expressing hope that South Africa can overcome the defending champions. However, he also admitted that a win would be considered an upset.

Speaking to Star Sports, de Villiers said: “This is a massive moment for South African cricket—a final at Lord's. The entire nation will be behind our team, and hopefully, we can cross the line. I'm excited for the challenge. It's a well-balanced side, and I'm quietly confident we can upset Australia. I say 'upset' because they're clearly the favourites for this ICC World Test Championship Final.”

De Villiers also acknowledged the strength and experience of the Australian side, suggesting that the task ahead will be tough for the Proteas. “Australia are a very experienced, well-oiled machine of a team. It won't be easy for South Africa. But I'm quietly confident because we're going there with many in-form players and big-hearted guys who have something to prove on this stage,” he added.

This will be South Africa’s maiden appearance in a WTC final, while Australia are entering their second consecutive final. In the 2023 WTC final, Australia defeated India to claim the title.

In the current WTC cycle, South Africa topped the points table with a percentage of 69.44 from 12 matches (eight wins, three losses, one draw – 100 points). Australia finished second with a percentage of 67.54 from 19 matches (13 wins, four losses, two draws – 154 points).

Interestingly, the last time these two sides met in a Test series was during the 2022–23 season, when Australia secured a 2-0 victory. Despite that, Australian batter Marnus Labuschagne acknowledged the threat posed by South Africa in the final during his interaction with the ICC.

“South Africa have been a very good team in this cycle, on paper it’s a well-balanced side and they have some really nice players. It will be a good challenge for us, and we are going to have to be on our game. Playing at Lord’s is always special with the history and what is involved with playing there. It’s going to be an awesome week and another great match,” Labuschagne said.
