According to former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra, Sai Sudarshan needs to step up and solidify his position at number three in the batting order because he is severely lacking in runs. On Day 1 of the first Test match against the West Indies on Thursday, October 2, at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, the left-handed batsman was removed for a mere seven runs.
After Sai Sudharsan had a difficult debut series in England, the selectors continued to believe in him as their No. 3 moving forward. In the 25th over of the first innings, a Roston Chase delivery skidded on and stayed a little low, trapping the hitter LBW. This did not start the home season in a promising manner.
As the team looks for a long-term No. 3 amid transition and Shubman Gill's move to No. 4 in the batting order, Sai Sudharsan has maintained his position in the lineup ahead of players like Abhimanyu Easwaran and Karun Nair.
He needs more runs to cement the no. 3 spot: Aakash Chopra on Sai Sudharsan
Sai Sudharsan needs a lot more runs to secure the No. 3 slot before the competition catches up to him and the rope runs out, according to Aakash Chopra.
"I'm a little disappointed for Sai Sudharsan, because he has not scored enough runs to cement the No. 3 spot. I'll tell you one thing: one mistake is allowed in cricket, which is to pick the wrong length, but if you play with a straight bat on top of that, then batters get out nine times out of ten," Aakash Chopra said on his YouTube channel.
Sai Sudharsan made his India Test debut in England and so far has scored 147 runs in seven innings for India with one fifty.
He had come into the West Indies Test series with runs behind him. He featured in the unofficial tests between India A and Australia A. He scored 248 runs in three innings, including a hundred in the record run chase in the second match.
