The match presentations at the end of a cricket game have been something to look forward to recently. The game has garnered immense popularity and as a result, has seen a huge influx of sponsorships. This has helped standardize these proceedings, however, there have been times when some weird things were awarded as the prize for the Man of the Match performance.
1. A blender
The Dhaka Premier League has always been in the news, more often than not for cricketing stuff on the field. Winning the game for his team in 2013, Luke Wright was awarded Man of the Match for his brilliant performance but what took the attention was that he was given a blender as the prize. This came as a surprise to fans as well as the player.
2. Shoelaces and a Bat grip
Bringing the weirdness to the international stage, the ODI series between Australia and India in 2019 saw a match-winning performance by the Australian speedster, Jhye Richardson. For his fiery spell, he was given shoelaces and a bat grip as the Man of the Match award.
3. Belt
Taking a thing from Wrestling, the International League T20 in the UAE started a new initiative. As the IPL gives away Orange and Purple caps to the highest run-scorer and wicket-taker respectively, the league started giving green and white belts for the same.
4. Rice Cooker
Dhaka Premier League once again gained some news headlines owing to another incident of a weird award. Eoin Morgan, in 2013, played a superb knock under pressure and was awarded a rice cooker for his Man of the Match performance. The league seems to have quite an interest in awarding utensils as a reward.
5. Snack Hampers
The Caribbean Premier League had Sunshine Snacks as one of their sponsors and surely they found an innovative award for the Man of the Match performance. Taking advertising to the next level, they gifted their snack hampers as an award to the players.
