India’s Test team is in a bit of a doldrum at the moment. After losing their first Test series at home since 2012 last year, they also lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy to Australia away from home. There is no certainty around the current captain Rohit Sharma while performances in the middle-order are not coming on a consistent basis.
A few in the squad are already waiting for an opportunity but the recent Ranji Trophy season certainly gave some hope to the fans that they can turn out to be the long term replacements for legendary players who are on their way out. Consistency and willingness to fight it out is the most important in the longest format and here we bring you three such players who deserve a chance in India’s Test team:
1. Karun Nair
This man has to be the first name on these lists until he gets picked in the Indian team. Karun Nair is still remembered for scoring a triple ton against England almost a decade ago but his current form is making a case for his comeback in the longest format of the game.
Karun Nair played a major role in Vidarbha winning the Ranji Trophy this season. He scored 863 runs in 16 innings at an average of 53.93 with four centuries and two fifties to his name. Nair’s consistency is one thing India could be longing for at the highest level and if given an opportunity, the man can seriously make his comeback, the one to remember for a long time to come.
2. Harsh Dubey
Harsh Dubey had a dream season as an all-rounder for Vidarbha. He created a record to pick most wickets in a single Ranji Trophy season accounting for a staggering 69 wickets in 19 innings at an average of 16.98 with seven five-wicket hauls to his name. Dubey’s left-arm orthodox bowling kept the batters on the tenterhooks right through the season.
Moreover, he played crucial knocks batting at number seven for Vidarbha. He scored 478 runs in 18 innings at an average of 28 with five fifties to his name. More often than not, he bailed the team out of trouble down the order and shepherded the tail brilliantly to stretch the team’s score as well.
3. Anshul Kamboj
Anshul Kamboj has already played for India A and other teams and is on the radar of the selectors too. If any, this Ranji Trophy season might have brought him even closer to the national selection in red-ball cricket. The pace bowler from Haryana picked up 34 wickets in 12 innings this season.
His bowling average of 13.79 is among the best in the top bowlers and picked up a five-wicket haul to go with two four-fers. Kamboj has the ability to make things happen on benign pitches with his efforts and might soon don the India jersey in the longest format of the game.
