Team India’s T20I team currently looks settled with around a year to go for the T20 World Cup next year. India and Sri Lanka will co-host the mega event next year and going by recent performance under Suryakumar Yadav’s captaincy, the men in blue have done extremely well on all fronts.
Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and Indian Premier League (IPL) are the two tournaments based on which the players are selected in the T20I team. Given that most players pick themselves right now, only a handful of slots are available. Here we bring you top 3 domestic performers who deserve a chance in India’s T20I team:
1. Rajat Patidar
Rajat Patidar is set to lead Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the upcoming edition of IPL. He has a knack of going big against the spinners in the middle overs and can change the course of the game with his knock. In the last season of SMAT, Patidar, while playing for Madhta Pradesh, smashed 428 runs in nine innings at an average of 61.14 and a strike rate of 186.08.
He was so consistent throughout the season and scored five half-centuries. He smacked as many as 27 sixes in nine outings and finished the match on a couple of occasions as well. Patidar deserves at least one chance to showcase his potential at the highest level and can do wonders if he clicks in the blue jersey.
2. Suryansh Shedge
Suryansh Shedge from Mumbai is a special talent. He has a habit of going only for sixes on a consistent basis and might find himself soon playing for India if he keeps his good habit going in IPL 2025. Shedge had the best strike rate among all batters in SMAT last season while batting lower down the order for Mumbai.
He is a death overs specialist with the bat and scored 131 runs last season at an impeccable strike rate of 251.92. In nine innings, his average was 43.66 and remained unbeaten on six occasions. This proves he is a finisher and a six-hitters and a player like him can turn the game on its head when things are getting tight.
3. Shahbaz Ahmed
Shahbaz Ahmed has made a name for himself as an all-rounder in the shortest format. He has been included in this list after looking at his good show in SMAT last season. He is Axar Patel like player who can do well with the bat and keeps it tight with the ball with his left-arm spin.
Playing for Bengal, Shahbaz scored 237 runs last season in six innings at a strike rate of 176.86 and remained unbeaten three times. He smacked 13 fours and 16 sixes during his stay in the middle. With the ball, the spinner picked up seven wickets while conceding at an economy of only 7.6 on flat pitches. Shahbaz can lend solidity to India middle and lower-middle order in Axar’s absence.
