New Update

The 15th edition of the Indian T20 League didn’t go what Kolkata could have expected. They played 14 matches in the tournament and could win only six out of those to end up in the seventh position in the league table. Later, their strategies during the auction also went like a setback for the two-time Indian T20 League champions.

Not having a settled and permanent opening pair was also one of the major concerns for the 2012 title winners. Apart from that, they also felt a lack of a properly designated wicketkeeper-batter in the squad.

With said that, here we’ll have a look at the 3 major issues that might become a difference between Shreyas Iyer’s men and the trophy of the Indian T20 League 2023.

Issues against Pace bowling

Former legendary New Zealand skipper and one of the explosive batters in the World Brendon McCullum was active as the batting coach of Kolkata last season. But the former Kiwi skipper couldn’t enjoy a similar kind of success with the Indian T20 League franchise that he has enjoyed with the national team of England of late.

The Kolkata batters faced difficulties in playing the pacers of either of the teams in the Indian T20 League. The 2014 Champions had a very poor number of balls per wicket (15) with a miserable strike rate of 133.

Batting in death slog overs and powerplay

The changes Kolkata has kept making changes in the top order of their batting lineup. It also came up with some negative impacts on the batting of the team during the phase of powerplay overs. Apart from that, out-of-form Venkatesh Iyer had also been a headache for the management.

The poor batting in the powerplay overs had led Kolkata to struggle in putting a big total on the board. Eventually, it’s going be to a big concern that immediately needs to be addressed by the management.

Lack of quality death bowlers

Problems with the bowling during the phase of slog overs is a concern for Kolkata that is going on with them for a very long time span. They faced similar sort of issues with death bowling during the 2022 edition of the Indian T20 League. The management did all efforts and tried all combinations but failed to come up with the results.

Kolkata’s bowlers have a horrible economy rate of 11.35 in the death overs which is enough to reflect their issues while defending a target or be it restricting any team from a big total.
