Cricket is a global sport that brings together top players from around the world to represent their countries. In the modern era, with franchise cricket expanding rapidly, many cricketers also find themselves playing for different teams across various leagues worldwide.
But beyond the intense on-field action across all three formats—Test, One-Day, and T20—fans have often enjoyed hilarious moments from inside team dressing rooms involving their favourite stars.
Whether it’s India, Australia, England, or any other cricketing nation, several light-hearted incidents have taken place behind the scenes and later emerged as funny stories cherished by fans. Over the years, many players have opened up and shared these memorable anecdotes, offering a glimpse into the funnier side of the game.
Here are the three funniest dressing room secrets (Revealed)
1. Prank on Virat Kohli
When Team India’s veteran batter Virat Kohli entered the Indian dressing room during his debut series, he was elated and excited to meet his childhood idol, Sachin Tendulkar, who was still an active part of the team. Spotting Kohli’s admiration for Tendulkar, some senior players — including Yuvraj Singh, Munaf Patel, and Harbhajan Singh — decided to play a prank on the young debutant.
They convinced Kohli that there was a long-standing ritual in the Indian team — that any debutant had to touch Tendulkar’s feet and seek his blessings before playing their first match. Taking it seriously, Kohli followed the instructions and bent down to touch Tendulkar’s feet.
To his surprise, Tendulkar was puzzled and quickly clarified that no such ritual existed. It was then that Kohli realized he had been pranked by his seniors.
2. Sourav Ganguly Gets Pranked by His Teammates
Ahead of a match against Pakistan in Kochi, former India captain Sourav Ganguly found himself on the receiving end of a hilarious prank, orchestrated by his teammates Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan Singh, and Virender Sehwag.
The trio showed up to a team meeting with a fake newspaper printout that included a fabricated interview. In it, Ganguly was shown as having openly criticised his own players. On seeing the article, Ganguly was left stunned and immediately tried to convince the team that he had never made such statements.
Despite his repeated explanations, the younger players pretended to be furious and refused to believe him. The situation escalated to the point where Ganguly, visibly upset, said he was ready to step down as captain.
That’s when vice-captain Rahul Dravid, sensing things had gone too far, stepped in and revealed the truth — it was all just a prank. The room, tense just moments before, burst into laughter, and Ganguly too joined in once he realised what had happened.
3. Banter Between Sunil Gavaskar and Farokh Engineer
In 1971, both Sunil Gavaskar and Farokh Engineer were part of the prestigious Rest of the World squad. Before one game, Engineer playfully warned the young Gavaskar with a cheeky remark: “Don’t get out for a duck, as the walk back to the pavilion will be the longest you’ve ever experienced here in Melbourne.”
However, as fate would have it, it was Engineer himself who was dismissed for a duck in that match, not Gavaskar.
