IPL 2025 was officially suspended yesterday for one week due to the ongoing war-like tensions between India and Pakistan.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) released a statement confirming the suspension and added that further updates regarding the revised schedule and venues will be announced after assessing the situation in consultation with relevant authorities and stakeholders.

However, if the situation escalates and hosting the remainder of the tournament in India becomes infeasible, BCCI may explore overseas options to complete the season in alternative venues.

United Arab Emirates (UAE)

The UAE could be considered as a potential venue since it has successfully hosted the IPL on several occasions in the past. In 2014, the first 20 matches of the tournament were played in the UAE due to a scheduling clash with the general elections in India.

Later, the entire 2020 edition was held there amid lockdown restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic. Again in 2021, the second half of the tournament was shifted to the UAE due to rising COVID-19 cases in India.

However, according to reports, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has already booked venues in the UAE for the remainder of the ongoing Pakistan Super League 10 (PSL X). That said, some sources have also claimed that the UAE has declined the request to host the PSL.

England

Various reports have also suggested that the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is already in “active talks” with the BCCI to host the remainder of IPL 2025, in case the tournament cannot resume in India.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan also weighed in on the possibility, tweeting: “I wonder if it’s possible to finish the IPL in the UK .. We have all the venues and the Indian players can then stay on for the Test series .. Just a thought ?” India’s upcoming five-match Test series against England is scheduled to begin on 20 June.

South Africa

The IPL 2009 was held in South Africa as the tournament coincided with the general elections in India. Over the years, IPL franchises have developed a strong familiarity with South African conditions, especially through their association with the SA20 League, where all six teams are owned by IPL franchise owners. Given this existing relationship and infrastructure, South Africa could emerge as a viable option to host the remainder of IPL 2025.
