Shreyas Iyer’s desperate dive in the first ODI against England has put his participation in the upcoming IPL into jeopardy. The Delhi Capitals skipper has a dislocated shoulder and if reports are to be believed, he may be out of action for the next few weeks. Iyer was extremely impressive in the 2020 edition of the IPL that was held in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and led Delhi Capitals to their maiden IPL final. With Iyer’s participation for the 2021 edition of the IPL in doubt, the Delhi outfit might have to look for alternate options who can lead Delhi in the absence of Shreayas Iyer. Given below are the three front runners to take over the role.
3.Ravichandran Ashwin
One veteran that the Delhi Capitals (DC) have in their squad is Ravichandran Ashwin. In fact, Ashwin has the experience of leading an IPL side before. The Tamil Nadu cricketer has led the Punjab Kings (PBKS) side in 28 matches and has a win percentage of 42.85%. Ashwin is also someone who loves to experiment and is always on the lookout for learning. With such a dynamic mindset, Ashwin can be a very good choice to hand over the Delhi Capitals' reigns for IPL 2021.
2.Ajinkya Rahane
Another man who can lead Delhi Capitals in the absence of Shreyas Iyer is Ajinkya Rahane. The 32-year-old is the vice-captain of the Indian Test side and even led the Indian team to a sensational series victory against the kangaroos earlier this year. Rahane has an experience of 25 games as a skipper of an IPL side. He has led Rising Pune Supergiant and Rajasthan Royals in the past.
1. Steve Smith
He brings with him a truckload of experience and is a modern-day colossus of the game. Without any doubt, Steve Smith is a legend in his own right. The Aussie batting icon also has an excellent record as the skipper in IPL cricket. In the 43 matches that Smith has led an IPL side, he has an impressive win percentage of 59.52%. Surely, the Delhi outfit can hand over the captaincy reigns to Smith if Shreyas Iyer is ruled out of the IPL.
