Former Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh backed India to come back stronger after a humiliating 3-1 series loss in the Border Gavaskar trophy against Australia. Yuvraj claimed that critics had a very short memory and that they needed to look back at how India had performed in Australia over the past ten years.

The two players who have been under the scanner are Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Rohit scored just 31 runs in five innings and also dropped himself after the MCG Test for the final showdown in Sydney.

Virat Kohli scored just 190 runs in the entire series despite a hundred in Perth and was dismissed edged into the slip cordon for as many as eight times. There has been a lot of talk around the future of the two players. However, Yuvraj shed light on their achievements.

“They’ve been performing for India for so many years, and sometimes they don’t get runs correct. There have been times when I haven’t gotten runs and a lot of great players haven’t gotten runs. That does not mean they are no great,” Yuvraj told Gulf News in Dubai on Monday.

“People have forgotten what Virat Kohli has done in the past — he has scored seven Test hundreds in Australia, and India won the two Test series in Australia. Virat got some good balls, and probably a couple of shots could have been avoided. But the point is that our memory is very fickle," Yuvraj added.

Yuvraj Singh on Shubman Gill

Yuvraj Singh has been a coach to young stars like Abhishek Sharma and Shubman Gill as well. Gill didn't have a great series against Australia and was found wanting on several occasions. However, Yuvraj feels that the experience of having played in the conditions will help Gill big time and help him bounce back.

“Gill must also be feeling that he hasn’t been performing to his best. Scoring runs away from India is really important, but unfortunately, he got injured. Then he played one game and didn’t play another. He was averaging 40-plus in Tests and was vice-captain. These are team decisions, so I can’t really comment on that," Yuvraj said.

“Gill is a fantastic player and will work hard to come back stronger,” Yuvraj said. “He needs to work hard on his game and find ways to get better in overseas conditions. I am confident that Team India will bounce back stronger,” he concluded.
