The shortest format of cricket is famous for big sixes and high-scoring games. However, a bowler’s standout performance in four overs can leave a lasting mark. In the Indian Premier League (IPL), the Purple Cap is awarded to the highest wicket-taker of the season. Over the years, many Indian and foreign bowlers have excelled to win this prestigious award.
In 2008, Pakistan’s Sohail Tanvir claimed the Purple Cap with 22 wickets for Rajasthan Royals (RR) and helped them win the title. The next season, RP Singh became the first Indian to win it, taking 23 wickets for Deccan Chargers (DC) and securing the IPL trophy. In 2010, RP won it again with 21 wickets for DC.
Sri Lankan legend Lasith Malinga bagged the award in 2011, taking 25 wickets for Mumbai Indians (MI). In 2012, South Africa’s Morne Morkel grabbed 25 wickets for Delhi Daredevils (DD). From 2013 to 2015, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) dominated, with Dwayne Bravo winning the Purple Cap twice (32 in 2013, 26 in 2015) and Mohit Sharma taking 23 wickets to win it in 2014.
India’s Bhuvneshwar Kumar won back-to-back Purple Caps in 2016 and 2017 for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), with 23 and 26 wickets, respectively. He played a crucial role in SRH’s IPL title win in 2016. Australia’s Andrew Tye claimed the award in 2018 with 24 wickets for Kings XI Punjab (KXIP), while CSK’s Imran Tahir won it in 2019 with 26 wickets.
In 2020, Kagiso Rabada of South Africa took 30 wickets for Delhi Capitals (DC) to win the Purple Cap. Harshal Patel won it in 2021 with 32 wickets for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), tying Bravo’s record for the most wickets in a single season.
In 2022, Yuzvendra Chahal claimed 27 wickets for Rajasthan Royals (RR), and in 2023, Mohammed Shami took 28 wickets for Gujarat Titans (GT).
Harshal also won the Purple Cap in 2024 with 24 wickets for Punjab Kings (PBKS), making him one of only three players, along with Bravo and Bhuvneshwar, to win the award twice.
