The Orange Cap in the Indian Premier League (IPL) is a prestigious award given to the highest run-scorer in a season. Over the years, many Indian and foreign players have won this award for their remarkable performances with the bat for their teams.

In the first IPL season in 2008, Australia’s Shaun Marsh won the Orange Cap for Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) by scoring 616 runs. In the next season, another Australian great, Matthew Hayden, won the award after scoring 572 runs for Chennai Super Kings (CSK). 

In 2010, Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar became the first Indian to win the Orange Cap. He scored 618 runs for Mumbai Indians (MI).

Chris Gayle, the former West Indies batter, won the award in back-to-back seasons (2011 and 2012) for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). He scored 608 and 733 runs, respectively.

In 2013, Australia’s Michael Hussey scored 733 runs to claim the Orange Cap for CSK. The following year, Robin Uthappa of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) scored 660 runs to win the award. He also became the first player to win the Orange Cap and the IPL title in the same season.

David Warner, another Australian star, won the Orange Cap three times (the only player to do so) for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in 2015, 2017, and 2019, with scores of 562, 641, and 692 runs, respectively. In 2016, Virat Kohli had an extraordinary season, scoring a record 973 runs for RCB as they finished runners-up. This remains the highest total by a batter in a single IPL season.

In 2018, Kane Williamson (735) of SRH won the award. In 2020 and 2021, KL Rahul (670) won the Orange Cap for Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) and Ruturaj Gaikwad (635) claimed it for CSK.

In the 2022 and 2023 seasons, England’s Jos Buttler (Rajasthan Royals) and Shubman Gill (Gujarat Titans) won the Orange Cap by scoring over 860 runs. Virat Kohli won it for the second time in the latest season with 741 runs, making him and his former RCB teammate Chris Gayle the only players to win the Orange Cap twice.
