Legendary Australian pacer Glenn McGrath has stated that Team India would’ve had more one-sided losses had Jasprit Bumrah not been part of the current Test side. Indian spearhead Bumrah is the team’s star performer, scalping 30 wickets from four games at an average of less than 20.
Team India, led by Rohit Sharma, is currently trailing the five-match Test series by 1-2 after losing the Boxing Day Test by 184 runs at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).
Attending the press conference at the sidelines of his foundation’s cancer awareness in Sydney, McGrath hailed the Indian pacer for his ability to adapt quickly to any conditions.
"He (Jasprit Bumrah) has been a massive part of the Indian team and without him, the series might have been more one-sided and what he does is special," McGrath told the media.
Notably, the New Year Test at the SCG is referred to as the pink Test, a major fundraising event for the McGrath Foundation in collaboration with Cricket Australia since the SCG Test in 2009 to support people suffering from breast cancer.
Talking about Bumrah’s short run-up, McGrath said, "Terrific young guy who has found a way to adapt. Absolutely incredible how he powers into the bowl the last few steps.”
Glenn McGrath confident of Mitchell Starc’s availability for SCG Test
The 54-year-old former pacer is also confident of Mitchell Starc being fit and available for the fifth and final Test at the SCG. It’s worth noting that Starc has bowled 131.2 overs so far in four Tests against India and he bowled with a painful rib in the Boxing Day Test at the MCG.
"It also depends on the state of the Test series and it is a massive game. Australia haven't beaten India in the last two series and that is unheard of. This is a massive Test. Guess it will be upto Mitch and he will do anything possible to play the match,” McGrath concluded.
In conclusion, Glenn McGrath's praise for Jasprit Bumrah highlights the Indian pacer's crucial role in the ongoing Test series. Bumrah's exceptional performance has been a key factor in keeping the series competitive. As the New Year Test at the SCG approaches, McGrath's confidence in Mitchell Starc's availability adds to the anticipation of an exciting match. The pink Test, a significant fundraising event for the McGrath Foundation, will see both teams giving their best efforts.
