On 24 June 2023, Ilia Topuria and Josh Emmett took on against each other at UFC Jacksonville. The bout took place inside the VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Florida. Speaking of the match, Topuria won it but Emmet put up a great show throughout the match.

After those powerful blows, it seemed that Emmet had been knocked out. But, he managed to keep himself alive while Topuria was in full control. He remained calm and composed while continuing his shots. He also held on to Emmett tightly to apply pressure. But, it did not turn out to be a full lock in the submission. In the end, Topuria avoided danger and took his opponent down. He won the bout with a unanimous decision, scores of 50-44, 50-42 and 49-45. Ilia Topuria earlier promised to become the world champion in UFC. Now, after this win, he is one more step closer to the crown.
After the win, he also sent a message to Alexander Volkanovski while talking to the reporters, Topuria said: “I showed it tonight that no one can match my level of skill inside the cage. I think everyone is in (agreement) with me. I know that I can finish anyone in this division. Just it was tough tonight. But I beat him pretty easy. It’s not going to be different with Alex. The recipe is going to be the same. I’m going to knock him out in the first round, second round. If not, I’m going to dominate him for five rounds, no problem. I want Volkanovski to defend his belt and come face me. His reign has ended, and mine is just beginning.”
