The curtain fell on another thrilling season of the Big Bash League (BBL) with Brisbane Heat crowned champions after a brilliant performance on away turf. Heat dominated throughout the 2023–24 season, finishing as toppers in the group stage and defeating Sydney Sixers by 54 runs in the final. Thanks to another cracking display by their bowlers, especially Spencer Johnson, Heat won their second coveted BBL title.

Heat lost the toss and were invited to bat first at the historic Sydney Cricket Ground. They lost opener Jimmy Peirson in the very first over but Josh Brown and captain Nathan McSweeney did not let the early setback affect the scoreboard. The duo added 85 runs for the second wicket before McSweeney was dismissed in the 12th over.

Steve OKeefe gave a massive breakthrough in the very over by removing dangerous Brown. The Australian batter smashed 53 runs off 38 balls to finish with 313 runs from 8 matches - the third-highest scorer of the tournament. Valuable contributions from Matt Renshaw (40 off 22) and Max Bryant (29 off 19) helped them to set a target of 167.

In reply, Sixers had to taste their own medicine when they lost opener Daniel Hughes on the third ball of the innings. Star of the night Johnson came into the attack and got rid of Jack Edwards before skipper Moises Henriques and Josh Philippe stitched a decent partnership. However, the Aussie pacer broke the partnership by dismissing Phillippe in the 9th over, putting Sixers in jeopardy.

Wickets kept falling at regular intervals as Mitchell Swepson and Xavier Bartlett also joined in wreaking havoc. Sixers succumbed to 112 runs on the board as Heat cruised to a comprehensive victory. Johnson, who won the Player of the Match, took four wickets for 26 runs in 4 fours. Bartlett and Swepson finished the chapter with two wickets.
