The stage was set in Colombo on 12 September 2023 for Team India and Sri Lanka as they locked horns with each other in the ‘Super 4’ clash of the ongoing Asia Cup. Both teams won their respective opening games in the ‘Super 4’ stage. So, both teams were looking for a win to strengthen their chances of qualifying for the final.

Speaking of the match, Rohit Sharma won the toss and asked the home to bowl first. Along with Rohit, Shubman Gill came out to bat and fans were hoping for another solid opening partnership from them. However, they gave a solid start as the Men in Blue reached 80 runs on the board in just 11 overs.

India got bundled out for 213 runs in 49.1 overs

But, then, Sri Lanka skipper, Dasun Shanaka brought Dunith Wellalage and he lit up the Premadasa Stadium. In his first three overs, he struck thrice and sent back Rohit, Gill, and Virat Kohli to the dugout. Suddenly, India were struggling with 91 runs for three wickets. Then, KL Rahul and Ishan Kishan put up a 63-run partnership for the fourth wicket. But, again Wellalage came and took the wickets of Rahul and Hardik Pandya. Thus, he grabbed his maiden fifer in the 50-over format and finished his spell with five wickets for 40 runs in 10 overs.

The pitch seemed to be a turning one as the ball was gripping and coming late on the bat. Hence, Shanaka used his other spin bowling options; Maheesh Theekshana, Chartith Asalanka, and Dhananjaya de Silva. But, surprisingly, it was Asalanka who grabbed four wickets for 18 runs in nine overs. Theekshana took one wicket. A day before this clash, India scored 356 runs for just two wickets, with fifties from Rohit, and Gill; centuries from Kohli and Rahul. So, fans were left surprised by such a miserable show from the batters against the Lankan spinners. Rohit was the highest scorer with 53 runs off 48 balls. Sri Lanka’s spinners took all 10 wickets as India got bundled out for 213 runs in 49.1 overs.
