On 10 December 2022, Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal took on Morocco in the third quarter-final of the ongoing FIFA World Cup. However, before the World Cup, he made headlines by giving an explosive interview about his former club, Manchester United. As a result, the club terminated his contract and wished him good luck with his future assignments.

After that, Ronaldo also issued a statement. “Following conversations with Manchester United we have mutually agreed to end our contract early. I love Manchester United and I love the fans, that will never ever change. However, it feels like the right time for me to seek a new challenge. I wish the team every success for the remainder of the season and for the future." Cristiano Ronaldo concluded.

However, Ronaldo also managed only one goal until this quarter-final clash. Even, in the last match against Switzerland, he did not even start the game for his country. So, fans were curious to see whether Ronaldo starts or not in this clash. Speaking about forms, Portugal came to this clash after defeating Switzerland by a huge margin of 6-1. On the other hand, Morocco were coming off after defeating Spain in a penalty shootout in the Round of 16. So, they were expecting to accomplish another upset in this tournament. Speaking of this clash, Portugal had a chance to score the opener in the fifth minute.

But, Morocco’s goalkeeper denied that effort. Then, Morocco’s striker, Youssef En Nesyri missed two golden chances of scoring in the seventh and 26th minute respectively. But, he did not make any mistake for the third time as he scored the opener in the 42nd minute. Thus, the first half ended 1-0. Ronaldo did not start the game. Hence, he came into the game in the second half. Then, Portugal tried hard to score the equalizer. But, their all efforts went in vain as Morocco hold the lead and the game ended 1-0 in favor of them. With that loss, Cristiano Ronaldo’s dream of winning his last World Cup got shattered. After the match, Ronaldo was seen in full tears as he straight headed to the tunnel en route to the dressing room. Seeing that, fans came up with mixed reactions on Twitter.
