Kolkata have managed to win their first game of the Indian T20 league. Amidst all the hype around the tournament opener, the two-time champions cruised through a clinical victory. Chennai would have to buckle up if they are to do better in this edition. It is safe to say that they had a bad day on the field, and simply weren't at their best.

After winning the toss and electing to bowl first, Kolkata's bowlers were right on the money. Chennai's top-order struggled to get going and none of them were able to hit the big shots. It was Umesh Yadav who was absolutely sensational with the new ball. Kolkata's spinners were superb as well as both, Varun Chakravarthy and Sunil Narine were economical.
Chennai were 61-5 at one stage, and it seemed as if they would struggle to cross 100. However, MS Dhoni was at his vintage best as he treated his fans with a gem of a knock. He and the newly-appointed skipper Ravindra Jadeja put up a 70-run partnership. While Dhoni scored an unbeaten half-century, the all-rounder scored an unbeaten 26, and finished the first inning with a six.
After being asked to score 132 to win their first game, Kolkata started their innings rather carefully. However, Ajinkya Rahane then played some classy shots and justified his selection. He looked really good during his stay, and scored 44 off 24 deliveries.
However, the damage was done by then as Kolkata needed just 45 runs off 50 balls after his dismissal. As for Chennai, none of their bowlers barring Dwayne Bravo looked threatening. The Caribbean entertainer took three wickets in his four overs. However, Kolkata's skipper Shreyas Iyer saw his team though, and scored an unbeaten 20. The Kolkata-based franchise chased the total with nine balls to spare
Although Kolkata ended up winning the game, Twitter users were delighted to see Dhoni at his best. Chennai fans, as well as the neutral fans, appreciated the keeper-batter for his entertaining knock. It is to be noted that this was his first half-century in the Indian T20 league since 2019. In the meanwhile, people acknowledged Iyer's captaincy as well.
