2019 World Cup winner Ben Stokes has announced his retirement from ODI cricket. The first one-dayer against South Africa on July 19 will be his final appearance in this format of the game. He made his debut in the 50-over format way back in 2011 against Ireland. He has played 104 games and has 2919 runs at an average of 39.44 including three hundreds and 21 fifties.
Notably, in his last game, he needs to score at least 81 runs to complete 3000 runs in the format. Meanwhile, he is the second member of the 2019 World Cup team to retire. Eoin Morgan retired from international cricket early this month. As a result, Jos Buttler was elevated as captain of limited-overs cricket. It is also needed to be noted that the England Test skipper was reported to be missing ODI cricket in the ongoing summer a few months ago.
In a long message he uploaded on Twitter, he said that it has become incredibly difficult for him to keep playing all three forms of the game. "Three formats are just unsustainable for me now," he said. "Not only do I feel that my body is letting me down because of the schedule and what is expected of us, but I also feel that I am taking the place of another player who can give Jos and the rest of the team their all. It's time for someone else to progress as a cricketer and make incredible memories like I have over the past 11 years.
Notably, Morgan, in an interview with Sky Sports Cricket ahead of the Netherlands series, had said that he hasn't been recovering well enough after the games. After a while, he decided to retire from the international game. Recently, after the Irish player's retirement, Stokes started batting at number four in ODI cricket against India. During the series, he couldn't score too many runs. Meanwhile, the fans have expressed their gratitude for the 2019 World Cup hero on Twitter. Some of them have remembered the moments from the final game of the tournament.

Such a shame that modern cricket scheduling means elite players like @benstokes38 have to choose which format they can give 100% to. Thanks for everything Ben, especially winning us the World Cup #benstokes https://t.co/SLJKWgZOyT
