SLC revealed that  franchise can have a 20 member squad, with six overseas players. Interested players can sign up for the draft from September 24, with October 5 being the deadline. But again, the availability of the overseas players will be a concern for the SLC as the tournament will clash with Australia's Big Bash League, which be played from December 5 to January 28.

The first edition of the LPL was played between November 26, 2019 - December 16, 2020. Five teams, Jaffna Stallions, Galle Gladiators, Kandy Tuskers, Dambulla Viiking and Colombo Kings – participated in the tournament. The same five teams will compete in the coming season as well. Jaffna Stallions defeated Galle Gladiators to claim the maiden title.

The LPL is a great opportunity for domestic cricketers to play alongside some of the biggest stars of international cricket. World Cricket need Sri Lanka to revive their cricket and LPL could serve a platform for the same. Sri Lanka have seen a massive slump of late. The former World Champions have to go through a qualifying round to book their berth in the main draw of the T20 World Cup. However, LPL will give the domestic players the much needed exposure which will help them prepare for the big stage.
