Australia are currently preparing for the 3rd Test against India in Indore. However, it will be a huge match for the Aussies as they are training by 2-0 in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy. After the Delhi Test, Pat Cummins went back to Australia and reports came out that Steve Smith can lead the team in Indore if Cummins would not come back in time.

Regarding that, Cricket Australia also issued an official statement. “Cummins has flown home for personal reasons due to a serious family illness. He will return to India later this week to re-join preparations for the third Test in Indore. We ask media to respect his privacy,” the statement reads. Now, on 24 February 2023, Cricket Australia confirmed that Steve Smith will lead the team in the third Test.

However, they are hopeful that the star pacer will be available for the last and fourth Test. "I have decided against returning to India at this time. I feel I am best being here with my family. I appreciate the overwhelming support I have received from Cricket Australia and my teammates. Thanks for your understanding," Cummins said. Meanwhile, Steve Smith joined the squad on 23 February in Delhi. After the horrible defeat in Delhi, he went to Dubai to spend some quality time with his wife, Dani.

Speaking of Steve Smith, he was the captain of 34 Tests between 2014 and 2018. Smith was even the captain during the Test tour of India in 2017. During that tenure, he was performing exceptionally well with the bat also. Since Cummins has taken the reign from Tim Paine, it will be the third time Smith has led the Test side. However, Smith has failed to score big runs in this ongoing series so far. In four innings, Steve Smith has scored 71 runs at an average of 23.66. But, fans found some funny angles to this news and came up with their views on the social media platform.
