The Kolkata franchise have dealt a major blow as their skipper, Shreyas Iyer is going to miss the Indian T20 League 2023 due to a back injury. So, all eyes were on the franchise as they were looking for a replacement for Iyer as the captain. Many names like Nitish Rana, Andre Russell, Sunil Narine, Shardul Thakur, and Rinku Singh were circulating.

However, on 27 March 2023, the franchise announced that Nitish Rana will be the interim skipper in Iyer’s absence. Listening to that news, some fans went crazy and shared their views on social media platforms, Some fans also blamed the Kolkata management for neglecting Andre Russell as a captaincy option over Rana.

Speaking of the announcement, the franchise shared an official statement also. The statement reads: “Kolkata franchise today announced that Nitish Rana would captain the side in the absence of Shreyas Iyer, who is recovering from a back injury. While we are hopeful that Shreyas will recover and participate at some stage in the Indian T20 League 2023 edition, we feel fortunate that Nitish, with the captaincy experience having led his state side in white ball cricket and the Indian T20 League experience he has had with Kolkata since 2018, will do a great job.”

“We are also confident that under Head Coach Chandrakant Pandit and the support staff, he will get all the support needed off the field, and the highly experienced leaders in the squad will provide all support that Nitish may need on the field. We wish him the best in his new role and Shreyas a full and speedy recovery,” the statement further added. Speaking about Rana’s career in Kolkata, he has scored 1744 runs along with grabbing seven wickets in 74 matches. On the other hand, Russell has played 91 matches and scored 1977 runs so far. He has also picked up 88 wickets with the ball. So, based on overall experiences and impact, fans were hoping to see Russell as the skipper than Rana.
