Former India batter VVS Laxman will take charge of the National Cricket Academy as the head of cricket on December 13. Laxman’s appointment was finalized during the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Saturday (December 4). He will now succeed Rahul Dravid, who vacated the post after he was appointed as the head coach of the senior men’s team.

Alongside Laxman, the BCCI also confirmed Troy Cooley as the fast bowling coach of NCA. BCCI president Sourav Ganguly had earlier said the contribution of senior cricketers in the development of Indian cricket is crucial. He also said the head of NCA is a vital position and wanted an experienced candidate for the role. Laxman has coaching experience as he was the mentor of Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Laxman’s tuning with Dravid is also great and now will look to continue the good work Dravid did as NCA head. “Laxman’s contract has been signed already. His last media assignment is the second Test between New Zealand and India. He will be joining Bengaluru from December 13. He is also for a certain period be in the West Indies for the U-19 ICC World Cup,” a senior BCCI office-bearer, privy to the development, was quoted as saying by India TV.

Meanwhile, in another major development, the BCCI official also said either Hrishikesh Kanitkar or Sitanshu Kotak, who are currently NCA coaches, will be the head coach of the Indian team during the Under-19 World Cup. ”We have also finalized all the NCA coaching appointments and it has been minuted,” he added further.

India have done well at the Under-19 World Cups for the past few years. They have won the tournament three times. The showpiece event gets underway from January 14 to February 5.
