The question about if Virat Kohli may surpass Sachin Tendulkar's record of 100 hundreds is back in focus. After breaking free from the constraints of the century stalemate across formats in September, the right-handed batters scored five hundreds, bringing his international record to 75 tonnes.

While most veterans have supported Kohli to pull off the unfathomable, former Indian team head coach Ravi Shastri made an astonishing statement about the likelihood. His three ODI centuries, two of them occurred in consecutive innings, put him only three tonnes shy of Sachin's ODI record of 49 tonnes. The glaring contrast is in the Tests, wherein Virat has 28 hundreds in 108 outings against Sachin's 51 in 200.

With 2023 also being an ODI World Cup year, the Bangalore batter has been tipped to break the famous batter's 50-over record this year. With the former India captain serving as an advocate for Test cricket, veterans believe that performances in the toughest format across the coming few years will give him a chance to break Sachin Tendulkar's record of 100 tonnes.

In an interview with SportsYaari, Shastri stated that Kohli can comfortably stay in the game for 5 to 6 years, but he did not confidently state whether the star batter can reach that historic milestone.

What did the former India Head coach say about Virat Kohli?

Ravi Shastri spoke about whether he thinks Kohli can reach 100 centuries or not. He said, “How many players have scored 100 hundreds? Just one. So if you are saying that he can cross that mark, it's a big thing. He still has a lot of cricket left in him. He is very fit. And when a player of that class starts scoring centuries then it follows one after the other. Probably in a stretch of 15 matches, there will be seven hundreds.

Ravi Shastri then spoke about how long can Kohli play the sport he loves. He said, “Kohli can still easily play cricket for 5-6 years because he is fit. But it is not easy by any stretch of imagination that is why only one guy has done it. But the fact that you are telling me he might reach there is a big thing.”
