On 8 May 2023, the stage was set at Eden Gardens, Kolkata as Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) took on Punjab Kings (PBKS). It was the 53rd match of the ongoing IPL. In the reverse fixture, PBKS defeated KKR. So, they were looking for another win while KKR were looking to win this time around in front of the home crowd.

In their last game against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), KKR registered a convincing victory. But, PBKS suffered a loss at the hands of Mumbai Indians (MI) in their last game. So, an enthralling battle was waiting for both teams and their fans. Speaking of the match, Shikhar Dhawan won the toss and asked KKR to field first.

Rinku Singh came up as the saviour again for KKR against PBKS 

For PBKS, skipper Dhawan and Prabhsimran Singh came out to bat. But, the batters failed to score freely as they lost their first three wickets within the first six overs. Dhawan scored 57 runs off 47 balls, including nine fours and one six. Apart from him, Jitesh Sharma scored 21 runs and put up a partnership of 53 runs with Dhawan for the fourth wicket. In the end, Shahrukh Khan scored 21* runs off eight balls along with Harpreet Brar’s 17* runs off nine balls. That helped PBKS to score 179 runs for seven wickets in 20 overs. For KKR, Varun Chakravarthy took three wickets while Harshit Rana grabbed two wickets. Both Suyash Sharma and Nitish Rana tok one wicket each.

Then, for the chase, Rahmanullah Gurbaz came out to open with Jason Roy. But, Gurbaz departed early after scoring just 15 runs. After a blistering start, Roy departed after scoring 38 runs off 24 balls. Skipper Rana scored 51 runs off 38 balls, including six fours and one six. Thus, KKR reached 129 runs for four wickets in 16 overs. Then, Russell smashed 42 runs off 23 balls, including three fours and three sixes. But, in the end, the equation came down to two runs needed from the last ball. However, Rinku Singh held his nerved and finished the game in favour of KKR. Thus, KKR defeated PBKS by five wickets.
