Steve Smith is currently not playing for any franchise in the ongoing IPL 2023. In this year’s auction, he has not registered himself. For that, franchises even failed to consider him as one of the replacements for injured players. However, in this year’s tournament, he has joined the star panel of Star Sports commentators.

Now, during a Q&A session on Instagram, Smith revealed the real reason behind not registering his name for the IPL 2023. Steve Smith said that he "did not put his name in the auction as this is a very big year for Australian cricket". He also added that he will register himself for the IPL 2024 auction. Regarding that, fans went crazy and shared their views on social media.

Steve Smith last played in IPL in 2021. After that, in the 2022 edition, he went unsold. As of now, Smith has played 103 matches in this tournament and scored 2485 runs, including one century. Recently, he came to India to play both the Test and ODI series against the Men in Blue. He failed miserably with the bat but impressed everyone with his captaincy abilities. Pat Cummins had to go back to Australia for personal reasons. As a result, Smith captained the team in the last two Tests and won one while drawing one game. The Aussies defeated India 2-1 in the ODI series.

Ahead of this year’s tournament, Smith shared a video to share his association with the IPL 2023. In that video, Steve Smith said: “Namaste India! I got some exciting news for you. I am joining Indian T20 League 2023. Yes, that’s right. I am joining an exceptional and passionate team in India.” Recently, he even predicted four teams who can qualify for the playoffs of the upcoming edition of the tournament. Smith said that Chennai, Gujarat, Lucknow, and Hyderabad are the four franchises that can qualify for the playoffs.
