Virat Kohli's decision to step down as India's Test captain took the world by storm. The fact that he announced this decision just a day after India lost the three-match Test series by 1-2 made it even more abrupt. Nevertheless, the batting maestro will still go down as the greatest Indian captain in the longest format of the game.

Former English cricketer Kevin Pietersen recently gave his thoughts on Kohli's decision to quit as India's Test captain. He felt that it is difficult for the 33-year-old to perform at “the best of his abilities” in bio-bubble environments. The former English captain felt that Kohli needs the crowds to get going.

"It will be very unfair to be too harsh, to be critical. Because you have not looked at Virat Kohli. Kohli needs crowds, he gets going (from it), he is an entertainer. I think it's very difficult for his personality to perform to the best of his (Kohli's) abilities (in the bubble). A lot of players have suffered. It is the greatest job in the world," said Kevin Pietersen, as quoted by Hindustan Times.

The 41-year-old also stated that he wasn't surprised by the Indian batter's decision to stop captaining India's Test team. He cited the fact that it is hard to play in bio-bubbles. Further on, he added that it's hard for every sports athlete.

"I'm actually not surprised that Virat wants just a little bit of a break from that extra pressure because it's damn difficult playing in these bubbles. It's very difficult to judge all International sportsmen, be it premier league footballers or any sportsman around the world, playing in a pandemic," he said.

"As a batter, I feed on the energy of players, and there are a lot of these players, be it in football, rugby or tennis," he added. It is to be noted that Pietersen is currently participating in the Legends League Cricket. In the meanwhile, Kohli is currently featuring in the three-match ODI series against South Africa, and is playing under the leadership of KL Rahul.
