Mumbai lost their opening game of the Indian T20 league 2022 as Delhi managed to beat them in an absolute thriller. Despite things looking absolutely bleak for them, their lower-order scored 75 runs off 30 balls. Thus, Mumbai continued their trend to lose their opening game of the season.

Contrary to the previous editions, Mumbai have a lot of weaknesses that were exposed on Sunday. So what exactly went wrong for them? Today, we will be taking a look at three reasons why Mumbai lost.

1) Death bowling:

While Mumbai have been famous for having world-class death bowlers, their bowling towards the final few overs was unacceptable, to say the least. The veteran Jasprit Bumrah was taken to the cleaners as well.

Daniel Sams leaked 24 runs in the 17th over and turned out to seal the deal for Delhi. In his four overs, he gave away 57 runs. As a matter of fact, none of Mumbai's pacers had an economy of less than 8.5.

2) Costly drop:

No team can afford a dropped catch, especially not during a crucial time. However, Mumbai's Tim David dropped Axar Patel when he was batting at 15. It was during Basil Thampi's final over.

After which, Patel went on to score 38 from just 17 deliveries. Hence, Mumbai would have probably won the game if David had held on to that catch. As the old saying goes, "catches win matches".

3) Failures of Kieron Pollard and Tim David:

Although Mumbai lost, Ishan Kishan played a sensational knock as he scored an unbeaten 81 from just 48 balls. However, he barely received any support from Mumbai's finishers. After the wicket of Tilak Varma, all the pressure was on the keeper-batter.

Kieron Pollard was disappointing as he was dismissed after scoring just three. Tim David perished rather quickly as well. A few more shots from them and the five-time champions could have had a bigger score.
