In a heartwarming gesture, team India donated INR 35, 000 to the Wankhede Stadium groundsmen on Monday (December 6) for preparing a good pitch. India defeated New Zealand by a huge margin of 372 runs on day four in Mumbai. The pitch was a sporting wicket and played beautifully on all four days. In recent times, India have been criticized for preparing wickets that were too much in favour of the home side. The matches would finish inside three days, with spinners running through the opposition batting. However, the Wankhede wicket was a good one that had something in it for everyone.

Also, the surface didn’t deteriorate after Day 1 which would have helped spinners to run amok. Instead, it remained the same for the majority of the days. New Zealand batters just failed to apply themselves better.

The team showed better application in the second innings but India spinners led by Ravi Ashwin found ways to dismiss the batters. India thus remained unbeaten at home under Virat Kohli’s captaincy and won the series 1-0.

Earlier, Head coach Rahul Dravid had donated rupees 35, 000 to the ground staff in Kanpur for preparing a fantastic wicket. The visitors had managed to hold on to a draw on a low and tricky surface in Kanpur.

“I think it was good to finish the series as winners, came close in Kanpur, not able to get that last wicket, had to work hard here. This result seems one-sided, but right through the series, we were made to work hard,” India coach Rahul Dravid said after the demolition act.

“There have been phases where we were behind and had to fight back, credit to the team. Great to see the boys stepping up and taking their opportunities,” he added.

Dravid and team India’s generous gesture towards ground staff in Kanpur and Mumbai has been appreciated by all.
