Under the leadership of Virat Kohli, India put in a sensational performance in the 5-match Test series in England in 2021. Prior to the start of the last Test, India were leading 2-1 and needed to win or draw the last Test to win the series. However, the fifth Test got postponed due to a Covid-19 outbreak in the Indian camp.
Team India are set to tour England for an all-format series in July. The tour will begin with the rescheduled 5th Test, slated to be played from 1st July to 5th July 2022. Rohit Sharma has been appointed as the new skipper and he is likely to lead the team in the Test match.
With India already taken a 2-1 lead, they would be looking to win the one remaining Test and take the series. However, a lot has been changed in England’s Test team since India’s last tour of England. Ben Stokes has been appointed as captain, while Brendon McCullum is the new head coach of England’s Test team.
In this article, we take a look at 3 English players that could be a threat to the Indian team for the fifth Test:
- Joe Root
Joe Root might have left England’s Test captaincy but he in superb form with the bat. Root recently reached the milestone of 10,000 runs in Test cricket during the first Test between New Zealand and England.
He scored a match-winning century to help England win the Test and take the lead in the series. He is, unarguably, England’s biggest match-winner in Test Cricket, at present, and will be a big threat to India.
- James Anderson
James Anderson was dropped from England’s Test team for the Test series against West Indies. However, the veteran cricketer was recalled into the Test side ahead of the ongoing series against New Zealand.
The Englishman showed why he is still regarded as a magician on English pitches on the very first day of the Test match itself. Anderson produced brilliant bowling figures of 4 for 66 in 16 overs. Anderson has troubled the Indian batters a lot, over the years, in England and is likely to prove to be a threat, once again.
- Ben Stokes
Following Joe Root's resignation as captain, Ben Stokes has been appointed as England’s new skipper in Test Cricket. He has made a great start to his Test captaincy career as England beat New Zealand by 5 wickets in the first Test of the series.
In pursuit of a 277-run total, Stokes played a handy knock of 54 runs in 110 balls. His ability to bowl and bat makes him a big asset for the team. Stokes would be keen to deny India of winning the final Test, and, thereby, win the series.
