India senior player tested positive for COVID-19, misses the England flight - Reports

India and England are slated to play the 5th Test match from 1st to 5th July 2022 in Birmingham at Edgebaston Stadium.

India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has reportedly tested positive for COVID-19 and hasn't taken the flight to England. Most of the players in the Test squad have already reached the United Kingdom and has started practicing. The Indian team will play the rescheduled fifth Test to start the tour, followed by six-limited over games. With only three days left in the four-day warm-up game against Leicester, Ashwin will surely miss the game.

The veteran spinner was tested positive before the team's departure. He is currently in isolation and it will end soon which is likely to reach before the first Test. For the unversed, the team is leading the series by 2-1 and it is important for them to win or draw the game to register their first series win since 2007. In that year, current head coach Rahul Dravid led the team to victory.

Meanwhile, a an Indian Cricket Board official has said that the 2011 World Cup winner hasn't travelled with the team as he tested positive before the team could depart. However, the official is hopeful that he will recover before the Test match starts.

“Ashwin hasn’t traveled with the squad to the U.K. as he has tested positive for COVID-19 before departure. But we are hopeful that he will recover well in time before the Test match starts on July 1. However, he might miss the practice game against Leicestershire,” a BCCI source was quoted by The Indian Express.

The Men In Blue will play the three-match T20I series, starting July 7, a day after the conclusion of the first Test.
