Another series, another captain. Looks like the Indian Cricket Board likes playing the musical chair for the national team's leadership role. Since last November, a lot of players have led the national team across formats. In T20Is, Rohit Sharma led the team in the three-match series against New Zealand. In the two-match Test series which followed, Ajinkya Rahane and Virat Kohli led the team in the first and second game respectively.

South Africa tour, which followed after the home series, saw two players leading the team. In two out of three Tests, Kohli led the team while KL Rahul led in the second game in the 33-year-old's absence. In the ODI series, thanks to Sharma's absence, KL Rahul led the team. Some sort of normalcy returned in the home series against the West Indies and Sri Lanka.

In these two series, Rohit led the team across formats. A few months after this, India started playing international cricket a few days after the end of the Indian T20 League 2022. Not surprisingly, a lot of senior players were rested for the series against South Africa last month. KL was set to lead the team before a groin injury ruled him out. In his place, Rishabh Pant led the side.

Soon after, the Men In Blue were meant to travel Ireland for two T20Is. With Pant scheduled to join the Test team in England, Hardik Pandya was asked to lead the team. In the fifth Test against England, the Mumbaikar was supposed to lead the team if not for COVID 19. Jasprit Bumrah became a captain for the first time in his career across all levels. When fans were expecting some normalcy returning, a new captain was named for the ODI series against the West Indies.

With a lot of senior players resting, Shikhar Dhawan has been appointed the skipper for the ODI series in Trinidad. Never in the history of Indian cricket this has happened.
