Murali Vijay has been a terrific opening batter for team India, especially in the longest format of the game. Not only in home conditions, but Vijay has performed in overseas conditions also. However, he lost his place in the Test team after 2018. He made his Test debut against Australia at Nagpur in November 2008.

But, he last played a Test match in December 2018 against the Aussies. He last played a ODI and T20I  match for team India during their tour of Zimbabwe. After that, he has failed to make a comeback in any format for the Men in Blue. Meanwhile, on 30 January 2023, Murali Vijay announced his retirement from international cricket irrespective of any format.

He shared a tweet to confirm his retirement. Murali Vijay tweeted: “Today, with immense gratitude & humility, I announce my retirement from all forms of International cricket. My journey from 2002-2018 has been the most wonderful years of my life for it was an honor to represent India at the highest level of the sport. I am grateful for the opportunities given to me by the Indian Cricket Board, Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA), Chennai franchise, and Chemplast Sanmar.”

“To all my teammates, coaches, mentors, and support staff: It has been an absolute privilege to have played with you all, and, I thank you all for helping turn my dream into reality. To cricket fans that have supported me through the ups & downs of international sport, will forever cherish the moments I spent with you all and your support has always been a source of motivation for me,” Vijay added.  

Vijay said: “Lastly, I would like to thank my family and friends for their unconditional love and support throughout my career. They have been my backbone and without them, I would not have been achieved what I have today.” However, Vijay expressed that he would be exploring new opportunities in cricket and its business aspects. For India, Murali Vijay played 87 matches across all three formats. In those matches, he scored 4490 runs, including 12 centuries and 16 half-centuries.
