The encounter between Ireland and England in the 20-20 World Cup 2022 turned out to be a great one for the fans. The neighbouring countries clashed at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in the Group 1 match. Jos Buttler called it right at the toss and asked Ireland to bat first.
England got an early success with the ball in form of Paul Stirling's wicket in the third over of the game. However, Lorcan Tucker joined captain Andrew Balbirnie in the middle to build an important partnership. The two batters played a smart game against the in-form English bowling attack, guiding the team to 59 runs in the powerplay. They continued to score runs and boundaries as they added an 82-run partnership for the second wicket.
The partnership was finally broken with the run out of Tucker (34) in the 12th over. Balbirnie (62), on the other hand, kept playing well and completed his half-century. After his wicket in the 16th over for a team score of132, Ireland had a complete batting collapse. Mark Wood, Sam Curran, and Liam Livingstone broke through the batting lineup to dismiss the opposition to 157 runs.
Ireland got off to a good start with the ball, taking a few wickets and restricting England. The Three Lions could only manage 37 runs in the powerplay and lost Jos Buttler, Alex Hales, and Ben Stokes cheaply. Dawid Malan and Harry Brook tried to build a partnership after that, but they could not do so. When the rain fell in Melbourne, Moeen Ali was looking to threaten the opposition. England had managed 105/5 in 14.3 overs at that point in time.
As it turns out, England was five runs behind the DLS target. In the end, the clouds did not turn away, and the match had to be called off. With this, Ireland beat England by five runs (DLS Method) to register their first win of the Super 12 Stages. This win reminded fans of Ireland's win over England in the 2011 World Cup played in India.
