The Bangladesh tour of New Zealand has started on a gloomy note as Bangladesh spin bowling coach Rangana Herath has tested positive for COVID-19. Meanwhile, eight other players have been sent into isolation after they came in close contact with a COVID positive passenger on their flight to Christchurch.

The remaining members of the squad went for training. However, the authorities asked them to complete three-day room quarantine because of their close contact with Herath. Meanwhile, the Sri Lanka off-spinner only has mild symptoms.

"Our bowling coach Herath has been Covid-19 positive. According to the rules there, Herath might need to undergo more days in quarantine," Akram told to media.

"During our flight to New Zealand, a passenger has been found as Covid-19 positive in later test. So the players who sit adjacent to that person are undergoing isolation for an extra period of time," Akram informed.

The squad arrived in New Zealand on December 10 and were supposed to be in managed isolation, which included training sessions from December 14. However, those plans have been put to rest now.

"We're maintaining the existing protocol," BCB CEO Nizamuddin Chowdhury told the Dhaka-based The Daily Star. "We will get a clear picture tomorrow (December 17) as they have taken a few samples today and the results are due. Since the players are isolated, hopefully, no other complications will arise. This is part of the new reality."

The Test series gets underway on January 1. The visitors will play two practice games before taking the field in the first Test. Their preparations, however, will be delayed by three more days.
