India locked horns with Australia on 17 March 2023 at Wankhede, Mumbai. It was the first of the three-match ODI series at home. After winning the Border-Gavaskar Trophy by 2-1, the Men in Blue were looking for a winning start in the series opener. However, Rohit Sharma was not available and therefore, Hardik Pandya led the side.

On the other hand, fans were also expecting a good show with the bat from the likes of Ishan Kishan, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, and Shubman Gill at the top. Speaking of the match, Hardik Pandya won the toss and opted to field first. Australia batted first and scored just 188 runs in 35.4 overs.

India lost four wickets at the top for just 39 runs in the first ODI

Team India’s bowlers had a fantastic outing as they bundled out the visitors in just 35.4 overs. Both Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj took three wickets each. Along with them, Ravindra Jadeja took two wickets while both Hardik Pandya and Kuldeep Yadav took one wicket each. After such a performance from the bowlers, fans were expecting a solid performance from the batters. But, Australia’s bowlers made an outrageous start to the innings as they took four wickets for just 39 runs.

First, Marcus Stoinis took the wicket of Ishan Kishan in the second over of the innings. He trapped the young batter in an LBW dismissal. Ishan got dismissed for just three runs. Then, Virat Kohli came out but he failed also. Mitchell Starc bowled a vicious inswinger and took his wicket in an LBW dismissal. After that, Suryakumar Yadav came and went for a golden duck on the next delivery of that over. Shubman Gill stayed a bit on the creased. But, he also failed after scoring 20 runs. Thus, in the first 10 overs, India scored only 39 runs for three wickets. Mitchell Starc took three wickets and Stoinis took one wicket.
