India have a great fan following in cricket and this is because of their dominance when it comes to the sport. The team does extremely well in major tournaments conducted by the World Cricket Body and notably, India are dominating in the ongoing 20-20 World Cup 2022 as well.

Although the team won the 50-over World Cup and 60-over World Cup in 2011 and 1983 respectively, India have good records when it comes to group-stage matches and they end up reaching the knockout stages most of the time. However, India have also won many bilateral series and created history as well.

1) First-ever overseas victory in 1968

India’s first-ever overseas victory came in the year 1968 when they toured New Zealand. The team led by Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi created history by registering their first overseas victory on the back of stupendous team performances.

Chasing a target of 200, Pataudi and his men put on an exceptional performance to clinch the victory with 5 wickets to spare. The Indian team went on to win the series 3-1 and it still remains to be one of the most successful overseas tours of all time for team India.

2) The Gabba Breach in 2021

After winning the Border-Gavaskar trophy when they toured Australia in 2018/19, India went on to retain the trophy yet again when they toured in 2020/21. Rattled by injury woes, India kept playing with new players and debutants in the series. 

Thangarasu Natarajan, who made it to the tour as a net bowler, had to make his debut as well. With the series tied 1-1, India went on to clinch the famous win at the Gabba stadium on January 19, 2021, where Australia lost after 33 years. 

3) The evergreen World Cup win in 1983

The team led by Kapil Dev won the 60-over World Cup for the first time in the year 1983 and it set the tone for India’s future. Since then, the Indian team started to script history in various tournaments. 

In 1983, India went on defeat two-time champions West Indies in the finals and the scenes still remain afresh in every Indian’s memory. Defending a target of 183, the Indian bowlers restricted the mighty Caribbean to just 140 runs and clinched the match by 43 runs. 

4) History scripted again in 2011 after 28 years

The 2011 World Cup is one of the biggest achievements in Indian cricket history and more likely it is because of the early exit in the 50-over World Cup 2007. After exiting in the group stage in the 2007 50-over World Cup, the Indian team management started grooming young players to prepare for the 2011 World Cup. 

The likes of Yuvraj Singh, Gautam Gambhir, Suresh Raina, Sachin Tendulkar, Zaheen Khan and MS Dhoni were vital for team India’s win in the tournament. India, after defeating Sri Lanka in the finals, won the mega event after waiting for 28 years. 

5) The beginning of a new era in 2007

The 2007 20-20 World Cup win turned out to be the beginning of a new era for the Indian team. Led by a new captain, MS Dhoni, India went on to defeat Pakistan in the finals by just 5 runs. However, it is still considered to be the turning point of Indian cricket post the Sourav Ganguly era.

The emergence of stars like Dhoni, Rohit Sharma and other youngsters proved helpful for India who suffered an early exit in the 50-over World Cup that year. It also paved way for the start of the Indian T20 League in 2008, which, is now considered to be the best league in cricket.
