After a dismal outing in the 2021 edition of the Indian T20 League 2021, Hyderabad left everyone in surprise as they released the likes of David Warner, Rashid Khan, and Jonny Bairstow for next season. Players such as Nicholas Pooran, Aiden Markram, and Rahul Tripathi were added to bolster the batting unit, while Kane Williamson continued as the skipper.

Hyderabad began with two consecutive losses, however, they bounced back with five wins in a row, thereafter. But, once again, they suffered a string of losses and couldn’t recover from thereon. Hyderabad lost 6 matches out of their last 7 games in the league stage. As a result, they finished at bottom of the table and failed to reach the playoffs for the second consecutive time.

In this article, we will be looking at three major reasons behind Hyderabad’s failure in the 2022 edition of the Indian T20 League:

  1. Kane Williamson’s poor form with the bat

Being the captain of the team, Kane Williamson had the responsibility to perform well with the bat. He chose to open the innings for the side but failed to make an impact. He got out on low scores consistently and, thus, Hyderabad couldn’t get solid starts at the top of the order. Williamson scored only 236 runs in 13 matches at an average of 19.64.

Kane Williamson was prolific with the bat during the 2017 and 2018 editions with the bat. However, his performance has seen a dip, thereafter. Since 2018, he has scored 757 runs at 32.91 at a strike rate of 121. With him being the captain of the side, the numbers are certainly not encouraging.

  1. Inconsistent bowling performances

Hyderabad managed to form a brilliant bowling unit, boasting of a lot of Indian stars. They had a great spin bowling option in Washington Sundar and an outstanding fast bowling unit, which comprises of Bhuvneshwar Kumar, T Natarajan, Marco Jansen, Umran Malik, etc.

However, they couldn’t perform as a unit. The bowling unit were guilty of conceding too many runs at times and couldn’t produce wickets at crucial stages in the game. Besides, injury to Washington Sundar in the second leg of the league stage didn’t help their cause either.

  1. Lack of wrist-spin options in the team

Wrist-spinners enjoyed great success in the 15th edition of the Indian T20 League. The likes of Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, Rashid Khan, and W Hasaranga made a huge impact with the ball. Chahal and Hasaranga occupied the top two spots with the most wickets.

Hyderabad lacked wrist-spin options in their squad. They had Shreyas Gopal, however, he was given only 1 match to prove his mettle. He picked 1 wicket in that game and conceded runs at an average of 10.89. Hyderabad could have made a greater impact with the ball if they had more options in the wrist spin department.
