India created history on Sunday as they beat 14-time champion, Indonesia, in the final to win their first-ever Thomas Cup. For the unversed, this is India’s first-ever gold medal in the history of the tournament. Since the inaugural edition, India finally bagged a gold medal after 73 years.

Earlier, India beat Denmark 3-2 in a thrilling semi-final on Friday. However, they didn’t settle for just silver and went on to create history on 15th May, Sunday. India beat 14-champion Indonesia in an emphatic fashion by a margin of 3-0.

In the first game of the final, Lakshya Sen defeated Anthony Sinsuka Ginting 8-21, 21-17, 21-16. In the second game, a doubles encounter, pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy/Chirag Shetty defeated Mohammad Ahsan and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo 18-21, 23-21, 21-19. Finally, Kidambi Srikanth sealed a historic win for India after defeating Jonatan Christie 21-15m 23-21.

Prior to the win, India had never reached the final in the history of the Thomas Cup. However, this time around, they not only broke the drought but went on to claim the title. With that, they now have become only the sixth nation to have won the Thomas Cup title after Indonesia, China, Japan, Denmark and Malaysia.

India didn’t come into the tournament with the ‘favourite’ tag. In fact, no one had expected them to reach the final and create history. However, the young Indian shuttlers showed what are capable of. This victory should inspire the coming generation and India should win a lot more such titles in the future.

Also, it is pertinent to note that the women’s team were crashed out of the tournament in the quarter-final of the Uber Cup. A lot of prominent personalities took to Twitter to hail India’s badminton team for achieving such a huge feat. India’s prime minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter to congratulate the team for scripting history.

‘The Indian badminton team has scripted history! The entire nation is elated by India winning the Thomas Cup! Congratulations to our accomplished team and best wishes to them for their future endeavours. This win will motivate so many upcoming sportspersons.’ The Prime Minister wrote on Twitter.

Several prominent stars such as Sachin Tendulkar, Tapsee Pannu etc. also congratulated the Indian contingent for pulling off an unbelievable effort. ‘What a moment for Indian Badminton! Congratulations to the team for winning over Malaysia and entering the semifinals of the #ThomasCup, assuring a medal! Well done Srikanth, Prannoy, Chirag, Satwiksairaj & Lakshya.’ Sachin Tendulkar wrote on Twitter.
