‘Isse acha WC ka taiyaari nahi ho sakta’ – Fans react as India defeat Sri Lanka by 41 runs, qualify for Asia Cup 2023 final

On 12 September, Team India took on Sri Lanka in the ‘Super 4’ clash of the ongoing Asia Cup in Colombo. India came to this clash after defeating their arch-rivals Pakistan by 228 runs. While Sri Lanka came to this clash after winning their last 13 consecutive ODIs. So, fans were expecting an enthraling battle between these sides. 

Speaking of the match, Rohit Sharma won the toss and opted to bat first. However, Shardul Thakur got rested as Axar Patel replaced him in the playing XI. For India, Rohit and Shubman Gill came out to open and they continued their form as a pair. They put up an 80-run opening partnership. Gill scored 19 runs and then, at the number three position, Virat Kohli came out to bat.

In the last four ODIs in Colombo, he scored a century each time. But, this time, he got out on just three runs. Rohit scored his third consecutive fifty of this tournament and got out on 53 runs off 48 balls. He also became the second-fastest batter (in 241 innings) to cross the 10,000-run mark in ODIs during the innings. Then, some contributions came from Ishan Kishan, KL Rahul, and Axar Patel as they got bundled out for 213 runs in 49.1 overs. Dunith Wellalage took five wickets while Charith Asalanka took four wickets. Maheesh Theekshana grabbed one wicket and thus, Sri Lanka’s spinners took all the 10 wickets of India. India’s batters struggled badly on that track as balls were gripping and coming slowly on the bat. 

In reply, India’s pacers were on a roll as Sri Lanka lost their three wickets for just 25 runs. After that, Rohit brought his spinners; Kuldeep Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, and Axar Patel. However, the Lankan batters struggled also as they lost their sixth wicket after scoring 99 runs on the first delivery of the 26th over. But, after that, Wellalage and Dhanajaya de Silva looked to steady the chase. They stitched a 63-run partnership for the seventh wicket as Dhananjaya scored 41 runs. Finally, they got bundled out for 172 runs in 41.3 overs and India won the game by 41 runs. Kuldeep Yadav took four wickets while both Ravindra Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah took two wickets each. Mohammed Siraj and Hardik Pandya grabbed one wicket each. With this win, India also qualified for the final of this ongoing Asia Cup.
