The Indian T20 League mini-auction is all set to take place on December 23, in Kochi and the teams announced their retention list on November 15, Tuesday. While there were many important decisions taken, many fans opined that a few retentions were unwanted and should have been released instead.

To add more, Chennai retained Devon Conway, the opener from New Zealand and much to the dreariness of the team, the southpaw did not have a good outing in the previous edition of the Indian T20 League.

As things stand, let us take a look at five players who did not deserve retention:

1) Devon Conway (Chennai)

Devon Conway made it to the Chennai franchise in the 2022 mega auction and the player had a sepulchral outing in the 2021 edition of the league. The southpaw was roped in for a price of INR 1 crore and it did not pay off in the league for the MS Dhoni-led team.

However, Chennai management went to retain him for the 2023 edition of the Indian T20 League and many opined that the player did not really deserve to stay in the squad. As things stand, it remains to see if Conway would turn things around in the upcoming edition and make a name for himself.

2) Vijay Shankar (Gujarat)

Vijay Shankar, the allrounder who was a part of India’s squad for the 2019 50-over World Cup, was eventually retained by the Gujarat franchise ahead of the mini-auction. However, the decision was questioned by the team’s fans who claimed that the allrounder is yet to play an impactful inning in the league.

To add more, Shankar, who is known for his conservative approach, averages only around 23 in the Indian T20 League and has bagged only 9 wickets in the tournament so far. Shankar would hope to make use of the opportunity and bounce back for Gujarat in the next edition.

3) Varun Chakravarthy (Kolkata)

Varun Chakravarthy, also called the ‘mystery spinner’, made it to the Indian squad for the 20-20 World Cup 2021 and was preferred over Yuzvendra Chahal. However, after making a name for himself in the Punjab franchise, Chakravarthy made it to the Kolkata franchise during the auction in 2020.

However, Chakravarthy had a poor outing in the last season as he managed to pick only 4 wickets in the 8 matches that he played and the fans went on to question the decision. Although the player had a poor outing last year, one would hope that he would make a comeback in the approaching Indian T20 league season.

4) Riyan Parag (Rajasthan)

Riyan Parag, the Indian youngster, made it to the Rajasthan franchise in the year 2019 and has stayed with the team since then. However, fans have been questioning his place in the team for a long time and much to the stupefaction of the Rajasthan team’s fans, the management went on to retain the player ahead of the 2023 mini-auction as well.

Concerning his outing in the Indian T20 League, Parag has a poor record as he averages only around 16 and with a strike rate of around 124. Out of the 32 innings that he has played in the league so far, Parag has managed to cross the fifty-run landmark only twice.

5) Khaleel Ahmed (Delhi)

Khaleel Ahmed was retained ahead of the upcoming mini-auction and the player is yet to make an impact with the ball in the league. The left-arm fast bowler, who was once a part of the Indian squad, faded post his continued dismal outings in the international arena.

However, Ahmed, who has an economy of around 8.5 in the league, will look to turn things around from the previous year and make an impact for the team in the upcoming edition of the Indian T20 League. Although he bagged 16 wickets in the last season, Ahmed’s lack of consistency made fans question his place in the team.
